Health Physics Associate Degree

What Will I Learn When I Earn My Health Physics Associate Degree?
The effects of radiation can be deadly, but radiation can also be used to treat cancer and generate electrical power. Those who work in health physics must help protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation so that it can be used in those beneficial ways.

Your coursework might include:
  • Biology
  • Biophysics
  • Chemistry
  • Ecology
  • Engineering (civil, electrical, mechanical, or nuclear)
  • Environmental sciences
  • Genetics
  • Metallurgy
  • Medicine
  • Physics
  • Physiology
  • Toxicology
What Careers Can I Get with a Health Physics Associate Degree?
Health physicists can work in a variety of places. At environmental and government regulatory agencies they investigate how radiation affects people and the environment, using this information to create new radiation-detection instruments or to establish new radiation-protection standards.

At hospitals or in pharmaceutical manufacturing they research how radiation can be used medicinally. For the power industry they look into using radiation to more efficiently generate electrical power. In research laboratories, they might study methods and equipment used in handling radiation, or they might assist scientists in designing radiation-control programs, or consult in a radiation emergency.

Traditionally with an associate degree you can become a health physics technician, then with work experience or further academic study you can become a health physicist.
