Associate Degree in Music

What Are the Benefits of Earning an Associate Degree in Music?
Musicians need extensive training to hone their skills in order to interpret, compose, or play music professionally. Associate degree courses may include:
  • Composition
  • Conducting
  • Music interpretation
  • Music theory
  • Performance on a particular instrument or singing
It's important to become familiar with a variety of music styles, not just the one you like best. Since only the very best can earn a living solely from their music or singing, many musicians teach courses at schools or to individual students. You need strong self-discipline, talent, good stage presence, creativity, and the ability to handle rejection and keep on trying.

What Careers Can I Get with an Associate Degree in Music?
Depending on your talent, and a bit of luck, you could find yourself performing at a nightclub, concert hall, or on Broadway. Some musicians record albums and go on tour, others compose soundtracks for motion pictures. You can play in a symphony orchestra or a rock band. You might learn multiple instruments ranging from brass to woodwind to electric synthesizers, or choose to focus solely on one.

You could become a musical director or conductor and lead musical groups, doing everything from auditioning and selecting musicians to join the group, choosing the music they perform, and directing rehearsals and performances. You could also compose original music or become an arranger and transcribe and adapt music, changing it from one style, tempo, or mix of instruments into something else.
